For the third consecutive year, I had the distinct privilege of leading, participating and providing both musical and technical advice in a great film music project at the University of Aberdeen, Music Department. This initiative is specifically tailored for students at University of Aberdeen, providing them with invaluable opportunities to engage in the world of film music composition and performance. This year's project featured an instrumental arrangement comprising a woodwind and string octet, which include the following instruments, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, 2 violins, viola and cello. This was originally conceptualised 'Scenes+Sessions' in 2023. Alongside my esteemed colleagues (and wonderful friends), Chiron Farrimond, Sam Griffiths, and Jonathan Worsley, we have witnessed the continued success of 'Scenes+Sessions.' We are profoundly grateful for the enthusiastic participation of the students and musicians who contribute their talents to this project, as their involvement is crucial to the project's ongoing success. Scenes+Sessions 2025 built upon the foundation established during its previous years, offering students the opportunity to have a purposefully crafted piece recorded with a professional ensemble. This process was guided by the Scenes+Sessions's four main organisers and culminated in the main recording session on March 22, 2025. This was performed by the Scenes+Sessions ensemble. Ensemble: Woodwind Quartet + String Quartet ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Scenes + Sessions is a film-music composition project organised by Xavier Lo (project lead), Chiron Farrimond, Sam Griffiths, and Jonathan Worsley. Through it, aspiring composers attend a series of educational workshops, culminating in them having their own short film scores recorded live by professional musicians. Jonathan's roles include Orchestration Tutor and Score Supervisor. He also composed reference scores for each of the four available films. These were arranged for both the actual live ensemble (woodwind quartet + string quartet), as well as for full orchestra.
